Metro Trains (2013)

Sketching -Solidworks – FDM Printing – Human factors design

Towards the end of my university degree I was asked on behalf of the university to design a new handle for Metro’s Comeng fleet.  The handles were great at what they did; a bit too good, and there were incidents of users forcing doors to gain access to trains and platforms while the train was in motion.

We came up with a design that was harder to get a grip on when the door was under gas pressure, but easy enough to pull and slide when the pressure was released.

This handle is the most public facing work I’ve completed, and while it is not without its detractors, it has been interesting to hear comments from people who could understand the intent of the design.
